Review Kissing the Shark
Oh my gosh, you guys, I just finished "Kissing the Shark" by CD Rachels, and I'm still swooning! Seriously, this book was a delightful escape, a perfect blend of humor, heart, and just the right amount of spice. It's everything you'd want in a paranormal rom-com and then some.
From the very first page, I was completely charmed by Razorjaw, the adorably naive shark shifter who walks straight out of the ocean and declares his undying love for Karlo, our wonderfully relatable and slightly jaded marine biologist. Razorjaw's fish-out-of-water antics had me giggling constantly. His earnest attempts to navigate the complexities of the human world, coupled with his unwavering devotion to Karlo, were utterly endearing. He's the kind of character you instantly want to protect and cuddle (and maybe even learn a few things from about expressing your feelings openly!).
Karlo, on the other hand, is perfectly imperfect. He's got baggage from past relationships, a demanding family, and a healthy dose of self-doubt. But his passion for his work and his slow-burn attraction to Razorjaw are incredibly compelling. Watching him cautiously open his heart to Razorjaw, letting go of his insecurities and embracing this unexpected love, was truly heartwarming. I loved how the authors didn't shy away from exploring Karlo's struggles as a Filipino man navigating societal expectations and family pressures, adding a layer of depth and realism to his character.
The chemistry between Karlo and Razorjaw is electric. The build-up is fantastic, a slow burn that perfectly captures the hesitant steps of falling in love. It's not just physical attraction; it's a connection built on shared experiences, mutual respect, and genuine affection. And when the sparks do fly, they're sizzling hot!
Beyond the central romance, I adored the supporting characters. The quirky crew at the Maritime Monsters Institute felt like a real family, and their interactions with Razorjaw provided many hilarious moments. The world-building, while not overly complex, was well-executed and added to the overall charm of the story. The author seamlessly blends the fantastical elements of shifter romance with the everyday realities of life, creating a world that felt both magical and relatable.
But it wasn't just the romance that made this book so special; it was the way CD Rachels captured the emotional journey of both characters. The moments of vulnerability, the quiet confessions of love, the struggles of overcoming self-doubt – these were all powerfully conveyed, making the characters feel incredibly real. The epilogue, in particular, left me with the warmest of fuzzies, a perfect ending to a perfect story.
If you're looking for a fun, heartwarming, and utterly charming monster romance that will leave you smiling, then "Kissing the Shark" is an absolute must-read. It's a delightful escape that will remind you of the power of love, the importance of self-acceptance, and the sheer joy of finding your happily ever after, even if it comes with a tail. Five out of five fins up!
